Drinking With Deborah

T/M: E. Waldner 2012

Midnight time in the Backwards Birds Bar, I was boozing all by myself

The bartender spent his precious time stapling empty glasses on a shelf

The door opened and this blonde stepped in, a rare bird in this drinker's cage

she walked as if she was royalty, you could say she entered the stage

She asked for a drink and I asked: ‹May I join you?› ‹Why not?› she did reply

A slight smile curling her full red lips. You can't say I didn't give it a try.

I asked for her name, she asked for my name, then we asked for another drink.

The bartender served and continued to wash empty ashtrays in the sink.

Drinking with Deborah - Oh she knew how to gulp down her stuff

Drinking with Deborah - The bartender couldn't serve fast enough

She said ‹I like men who can hold their booze›, I answered ‹You found the right guy›

She payed the next round and I payed the next round without a blink of an eye.

First she said she thought I was fun but somehow she changed her mind

My witticisms triggered her criticism. The reason's not so hard to find.

Drinking with Deborah - The bartender started to frown

I began to understand that the world was turning and the only stable point was myself

my sight got blurred, first at the edges, and then I slid out of sight of the shelf

I admired Deborah's ankles, I admired her shoes and wondered why they had come so near

From far away I heard the bartender say ‹Do you prefer vodka, wine, or beer?›

She said ‹One for the road, but only for me cos this guy is flat out on the floor›

and with a slight smile curling her full red lips she said ‹I thought that he could take more›

After a great struggle I returned to eye level and staggered off in search of the loo

Now there was one man ill prepared for his task but somehow, somehow I came through

When I returned she had left the joint and a message for me to receive

That I would do better to sleep on the table or if I was able I should pay and then leave

Drinking with Deborah - I was about to puke all over the place

Drinking with Deborah - The bartender lost the smile on his face
